Christmas Safety with Children at the Shopping Mall
Santa will be making his scheduled stop again this month, which means Christmas is just around the corner.
If, however, you aren’t able to leave your children at home with someone while buying gifts for your friends and family, you may find yourself taking them with you. If this is the case, you need to think about their safety during this busy shopping period.
Here are a few safety tips to consider when out shopping with your children this holiday season.
1. Plan your time accordingly. It is to be expected that when out shopping this month you will find yourself up against a crowd as everyone decides to shop on the same day as you. Don’t worry though. Instead of leaving your shopping to the last minute on the weekend, why not do it during the week when it is less busy. This way you can avoid the crowds without having to sacrifice your shopping time.
2. Have a plan. While you don’t want to envisage your children losing you it could happen. In order to avoid any prolonged distress you should have a plan in place so that you can quickly find each other. If you are doing your shopping in one mall then this won’t be too hard as there is generally a meeting point that you can all agree on if you become separated.
If, however, you are doing your shopping in a number of places around town then you should make sure that your children are old enough to work a phone and that they know your mobile number by heart – or else write it down for them – so that they can contact you if need be.
3. Stress the importance of strangers. Even though the festive season is upon us that doesn’t mean we should talk to everyone and anyone. It is important for you as the adult to tell your children that talking to strangers is something they should avoid. Strangers they can talk to, if need be, could of course include security guards in a shopping mall or shop assistants who will be able to help relocate you together again.
4. Maintain a watch. While you may be out shopping for presents that shouldn’t mean you should be any less watchful over your children. Granted, shopping at this time of the year can be a stressful event, but in order to make the day run as smoothly as possible you should take it upon yourself as the parent to make sure that your children are with you at all times, so that any wandering off is avoided.
By following these simple rules you can make sure that your children stay safe while you are all out shopping. By taking the necessary steps you can avoid having a Christmas that gets off to a bad start when it comes to your child’s safety.
Christmas shopping can often be fraught with unnecessary stress, but there are simple steps to take to avoid this.
